Chrysler cuts back at three local dealers

Chrysler announced today that they are closing 789 of their dealerships, and while no local dealerships are closing as of yet, three will stop selling Chrysler-made cars. According to a filing in federal bankruptcy court, Charlottesville’s Battlefield Motors will stop selling the Jeep brand, Obaugh Ford in Staunton will no longer sell the Chrysler line, and Berrang GM/Chrysler will stop carrying Chryslers, Dodges, Dodge Trucks and Jeeps. More bad news is expected this week from General Motors, which is expected to close around 1,000 of its dealerships by Friday.

Kennedys endorse Moran in governor’s race

Former Democratic National Committee chair Terry McAuliffe might have President Bill Clinton and former Clinton aides like James Carville campaigning for him in his bid to become the next Governor of Virginia, but one of McAuliffe’s rivals for the Democratic nomination just got an equally powerful political family to back his campaign. Former delegate Brian Moran announced today that he has received endorsements from Ethel Kennedy, widow of slain Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, and Congressman Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), son of Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA). This marks the second time in as many years the Clinton family and the Kennedy family have been at odds in a Democratic primary. Last year Senator Kennedy and daughter Caroline endorsed President Obama’s candidacy over that of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Chamber pegs graduation effect at $5 million

Chamber of Commerce prez Tim Hulbert guesstimates the total economic jolt of this weekend’s UVA’s graduation at least $5 million. Here’s his math: 3,200 hotel rooms averaging $200 x 2.5 nights ($1.6 million) + 8,000 overnighters eating 2.5 meals averaging $30 for 2.5 days ($1.5 million) + 20,000 day-trippers eating 2 meals ($1.2 million) = $4.3 million plus gas, souvenirs, and other purchases. Rehabbed Greanleaf ’spray garden’ opens tomorrow

Greenleaf Park’s “spray garden” has been refurbished and opens for the season Saturday, May 16. Greenleaf— which used to be part of McIntire Park until the 250 Bypass was built— is also getting some construction to improve pedestrian access from Rose Hill Drive, according to City spokesperson Ric Barrick.
