Penne Lane comes to West Main

dish-pennelaneA New York-style deli called Penne Lane Deli is scheduled to open up in part of the old Si Tapas/Starr Hill Brewery space on West Main Street this Thursday, April 15. It’s the brainchild of Elizabeth and Joe Gugliucci, former New Yorkers who traded city life for a place in Palmyra seven years ago. For 15 years they owned a Penne Lane Deli in Port Jefferson, Long Island, but moved down here and bought the Boyd Tavern Market, which they sold in 2008.

“We decided to get jobs,” Elizabeth Gugliucci laughs,” but that was a mistake. We realized we like to be owners. Plus, we missed the deli.”

Gugliucci (maiden name Dowd), whose mother was born in Ireland, is a trained chef who once cooked for Julia Child, and her husband lives to bake, she says. The two plan to bake all their own breads and pastries and offer a host of homemade salads, sandwiches, meats, coffees, teas, and other deli delicacies. They’ll also be offering catering services. The place is small, only five tables, but folks are welcome to eat in or take out from 7am to 6pm six days a week. Depending on how things go, they may stay open later.

“We’ll have all the delicious things Grandma used to make,” says Gugliucci. “Nothing out of a box.”

    This sounds great-the challenge in this location is parking. If only the owners of the lot next to the train station would pave it: the potholes are big enough to swallow your car.

    Being Walker Square residents, we’ve been watching the space for quite some time.

    I wonder if they’ll have black and white cookies! There are plenty of good ones in town, but none that taste like the ones back home. :)

    Closing at six is going to lose a lot of dinner business. The “I left work late and need to grab take-out for the entire family / friends / roommates” kind of business.

    MTT, same place one parked when it was Si Tapas and Blue Ridge Brewing Company. same place one parks if one goes to Maya. on main street or one of the side streets roundabout there.

    Hoolarious, A deli needs lots of traffic to make it… that’s my point… eventually the lot where the train station is going away. it’s quit difficult to park near there at dinner and at lunch.
