The University of Virginia’s McIntire Department of Art presents a lecture by New York City-based installation artist and figurative painter, Nicole Eisenman. In the last three years, she has had solo exhibitions in Zurich, Berlin, Mexico City, Los Angeles and New York. Artist and writer Arnold J. Kemp wrote: “Her drawing style is reminiscent of the WPA and artists such as Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Mangold and Paul Cadmus, but hers is a complexity that belies its accessibility.” The recipient of Joan Mitchell and Guggenheim awards, Eisenman is represented by Leo Koenig Inc in New York City.

The University of Virginia Art Museum’s 2008 Ellen Bayard Weedon Lecture in the Arts of Asia presents Dr. Hiram Woodward, who will discuss “Java’s Great Buddhist Monument, Borobudur: Indian, Chinese, and Javanese Perspectives.” The talk will describe the monument, estimated to be 1,200 years old, and outline some of the more recent interpretations of its meaning, especially the ways its designers incorporated beliefs current in Chinese Buddhism at the time. Artinplace.org invites entries for 2009 C2D

Artinplace.org invites artists to create visual images inspired by the theme, “Charlottesville A Multicultural Community—50 Years after Desegregation,” for inclusion in the 2009 C2D (”Charlottesville in Two Dimensions”) exhibition. All work submitted will be hung (although artinplace.org reserves the right to refuse any work deemed inappropriate). A $10 entry fee per work is required. Work will be received at the McGuffey Art Center on Saturday, February 28, 2009, 1-5pm or email for an appointment. All work will be on display from March 7 to March 28, 2009. The University of Virignia Art Museum invites children and their parents to a Family ArtJAM entitled, “Paper Collage, Abstraction, and Movement: Exploring the El Lissitzky Exhibition.” After a docent-lead tour of the exhibit, children and parents will create their own paper collage influenced by Lissitzky. Participants will also be treated to a special improvisational performance by a group of dancers and musicians from the McGuffey Art Center. Everyone is encouraged to wear Lissitzky’s preferred colors: white, black, red, yellow and gray. Program for 4-7-year-olds and their parents, 1-3pm.
