Lock up your daughters, Charlottesville. Pollstar reports that rapper, rocker, and full-time party boy Kid Rock is coming to John Paul Jones Arena Wednesday, March 12, with opening act Reverend Run of Run D.M.C. fame. John Paul Jones Arena has not announced the date or when tickets will go on sale.

Kid Rock (born Robert Ritchie) broke through to mainstream success in 1999 with hit singles “Bawitaba,” “Cowboy,” and “Only God Knows Why,” propelling his album Devil Without a Cause to become one of the most commercially successful CDs of the ’90s with 11 million copies sold. Two years later, he ingratiated himself with a new audience when he recorded the ballad “Picture.” The duet with Sheryl Crow became a hit on Billboard’s pop, country, and adult contemporary charts.

Since then, he’s become a favorite among rockers of an older generation. He inducted Aerosmith into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, has served as substitute lead singer with both Metallica and Lynyrd Skynyrd, held a made-for-TV concert of duets with Hank Williams Jr., sat in with ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons at the 2006 Billboard Music Awards, and recorded a cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women” with rock ‘n roll founding father Jerry Lee Lewis on his 2006 album, Last Man Standing.

The Kid has enjoyed an adult serving of controversy over the years. He incited a plastic bottle-throwing riot at the Woodstock ‘99 concert, though no criminal charges were filed.

Rock was not so lucky when he got into a fistfight with Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas on September 9: he was cited for misdemeanor battery, although Lee (who, like Rock, is an ex-husband of Playboy playmate and Baywatch star Pamela Anderson) decided to drop the charge. Just over a month later in the early morning hours of October 21, he found himself in an altercation with a man at an Atlanta-area Waffle House. Police arrested Rock for misdemeanor battery.

None of the boozing and brawling seems to have hurt Kid Rock’s bottom line, however. To date, he’s sold 18.5 million albums in the U.S. alone, according to the Recording Industry Association of America, more than Jackson Browne, the Monkees, Patsy Cline, Bob Marley, Paul Simon, Janis Joplin the Grateful Dead, Cher, Neil Young, or even John Lennon can boast.

Huh? I forgot all about Kid Rock. The best thing he’s ever done is Pam Anderson … errr … Lee … err … Rock … whatever!

I’ll always remember Pam Anderson as “C.J. Parker” from Baywatch. Oh, man, I just got a horrible visual of Mitch Buchanon.

So, is he coming to JPJ or NOT? It’s NOT on the JPJ website and rumor has it that he’s not being “approved” to come to our “precious town”…although RAW is…go figure! I guess you don’t want to upset the Charlottesvillians…or on an easier note…the SNOBS!!!!!!!!!

Lori, both Pollstar and Kid Rock’s website list the JPJ date as part of the upcoming tour. Generally, Pollstar and the artist’s website are pretty reliable sources when it comes to concert dates and, on occasion, the John Paul Jones Arena won’t announce at the same time as the artist. Stay tuned…
