Submissions

by Vijith Assar

Thanks for submitting your event listing to the Hook’s online calendar. Sending event information via or our web form is highly preferable to telephone or fax; follow the guidelines below in order to help us give your event as much exposure as we can.

Basic information

All event submissions must include:

  • Date
  • Time
  • Location or venue
  • Price
  • A brief description of the act
  • If it is free, please explicitly say so instead of omitting the price entirely.

    Descriptions, Biographies, and News

Including more information about the event makes it easier for us to make your listing longer and more informative to the reader. Feel free to include information on the style of music, any particular cover songs you play, special guest performers, or whatever else you deem appropriate. Band bios are always welcome as well, but try to give us more facts than adjectives.

With many local performers, we already know the deal, so please feel free to update us instead. Did you just play a particularly cool show? Are you working on a new album? Let us know what’s going on.

    Pictures

We use photographs both in print on the web. We need high-resolution files at 300 dpi or more for print use and lower resolution files at around 72 dpi for the web site. Please send both. Links are preferable to attachments.

    Audio

We include super-cool one-click streaming audio samples next to the event listings and also have a mammoth media player on the front page. We usually make the MP3s available for download and podcast them to our readers on the day of the show (but please note that podcasting is handled a little differently for local acts).

If you have a problem with either, we can set your files to stream-only. Please be warned that this means your music will only be accessible from “All Events” view and won’t be on the page we will create for your show, but more importantly, it will also probably result in us cracking little jokes with one another about being out of touch and possibly making unfavorable comparisons between your band and Radiohead. The same goes for files present in our archive of past events, which can be removed after the show even though we will almost certainly disapprove.

If you are an artist, feel free to submit your own work as you see fit. If you are a promoter or a venue employee, PLEASE check with the artist’s management, label, and/or publicist before doing this, or we could both end up on the wrong side of a copyright violation.

Try to make sure your files are tagged properly with the album cover art and information about the album, track number, and release date. We can only use regular MP3 files for compatibility reasons; for some insane reason iTunes defaults to a different format (AAC, also sometimes known as M4A), so you may need to change that first. The relevant setting can be found by opening the program preferences, switching to the Advanced tab, and then looking in the Importing section.

You can submit your files as or send us links if you’ve got the files hosted on your own servers, but using our handy web-based file upload utility is by far the best option and pretty much ensures that we can’t accidentally lose your files.

    Video

Embeddable Flash video from sites like YouTube is quite likely to make it into your event listing. In many cases we can find this on our own, but if you have a favorite, feel free to send it along.
