George Melvin wears many hats (not all of them as cool as this one), and his long-standing gig at South Street even has him wearing several at the same time. For the “Group Sound” format, Melvin plays several keyboards at once, using his left hand for walking basslines that match up with jazzy drum loops and working the sustain pedal to give the illusion of multiple right-hand parts.
Multi-faceted Dutch jazz drummer Han Bennink played with Eric Dolphy and Sonny Rollins in the 60’s before moving into free jazz. Here, he performs with violinist Mary Oliver and Chapman Stick artist Greg Howard at a show that’s free to college and high school students and $10 for everyone else and will be followed by a master class for those who bring their instruments.
Local guitarist Matthew Willner tangles with a rotating cast of supporting musicians.
