Of all those currently vying for the title of “biggest band in the world” (see also: Radiohead, E Street) U2 is probably closest to having the sound to match. Early albums like Boy and War started with an endearingly precocious sparkle that has since grown into obsessively spit-shined studio sheen airbrushed over atop soaring melodies for this year’s No Line On The Horizon. Frontman Bono’s spiritually-inclined lyrical content likewise has an arc of grandeur that is well suited to both of the above as well as his insistence on wearing sunglasses all the time, but being that this is a guy responsible for spearheading western civilization’s humanitarian aid efforts in Africa, we’ll give it to him. (It doesn’t hurt that he insisted on cheap tickets, either.)
